Corrosion prevention measures for solar carport structures can be considered and implemented in a number of ways. Below are some effective corrosion prevention methods and recommendations:

 

Material Selection:

Using corrosion-resistant materials is key to preventing corrosion. For example, stainless steel, aluminum alloys and weathering steels are common choices. Stainless steel has good corrosion resistance and excels especially in coastal or salt spray environments.

Weathering steel is capable of forming a dense oxide layer under atmospheric conditions by adding a variety of rare elements (e.g., Cu, P, Cr, Ni, etc.) during the smelting process, which significantly improves corrosion resistance.

 

Coating and cladding technology

The use of anti-corrosion coatings, such as Hot Dipped Galvanizing (HDG) coatings, can effectively protect steel from corrosion. HDG coatings are not only durable, but also require no subsequent maintenance, making them an economical and environmentally friendly option.

Applying anti-corrosion coatings is also a common method, such as using HC Solar Shield anti-corrosion coatings, which have excellent physical and mechanical properties and resistance to chemical media corrosion.

 

Electrochemical protection:

Sacrificial anode protection is a commonly used electrochemical protection method that protects the target metal from corrosion by sacrificing a more reactive metal. This method is simple and easy to use, but has a short life span.

Cathodic protection (CP) is also an effective electrochemical protection method, especially for corrosion protection of steel reinforcement in concrete structures.

 

Structural design:

It is important to consider corrosion prevention measures at the design stage. For example, direct contact between dissimilar metal materials is avoided to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Reduce the risk of corrosion by using a sealed and waterproof design that prevents moisture and corrosive gases from entering the interior of the PV module.

 

Regular maintenance and inspections:

Regular cleaning and inspection of solar carports and their components to detect and address signs of corrosion in a timely manner can effectively extend their lifespan.

For components exposed to harsh environments, such as solar carports mounting in coastal areas, materials and coatings resistant to salt spray corrosion are recommended.
